Career Opportunities in Engineering

Engineering is such a profession with full of challenges where creativity and ingenuity has no limits and boundaries. Career in engineering stream makes you to explore into the depths of ocean which takes you to the world of outer space. Today, due to the development of science and technology, career in engineering offers a wide range of options such as aeronautical, electrical, electronics, computer science, textile, agricultural, production engineering, industrial streams.

Many engineers develop new products. During the process, they consider several factors. Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop economical solutions to technical problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and the commercial applications that meet societal and consumer needs.

Engineers work in testing, production, or maintenance departments. They supervise the production in factories, determine the causes of a component?s failure, and test manufactured products to maintain quality. Engineers also estimate the time and cost required to complete projects. Supervisory engineers are responsible for major components or entire projects.

There are numerous other specialties covered in the Federal Government’s Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system and recognized by engineering professionals such as:

Mechanical engineers
Civil engineers
Aerospace engineers
Agricultural engineers
Biomedical engineers
Chemical engineers
Computer hardware engineers
Electrical engineers
Environmental engineers
Industrial engineers
Marine engineers and naval architects
Materials engineers
Mining and geological engineers
Petroleum engineers
Nuclear engineers
Work environment.

The engineers should possess the skills such as creativity, inquisitive, analytical, and detail orientation. They should have good communication skills both orally and written to be able to work as part of a team and since they interact more frequently with specialists in a wide range of fields outside engineering.

Engineering courses are usually offered at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate level. Admission to the engineering courses is done on the basis of merit in the entrance exam conducted at the state or national level.

The candidate who wants to pursue career in engineering should pass 10+2 with 50% marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics for the eligibility in undergraduate i.e. B.E/B.Tech engineering. For postgraduate course i.e. M.E/M.Tech, a Bachelor?s degree in engineering is required and for doctoral course, post graduation in the relevant subject is essential.

After completion of engineering the candidates can find job opportunities in almost all related industries, academics and research institutes. They also find employment in the government sector in both state and central government.

Engineers offering their services directly to the public must be licensed. Engineers should always need to upgrade their skills by continuing education to keep current with rapidly changing technology.? Graduate training is essential for engineering faculty positions. But candidates passed out from a comparatively lower rated college have to strive hard for their entry level job.
