Colon Cancer Signs And Symptoms

Colon cancer is the growth of cancer cells or tumor which develops in intestine. Colon cancer and rectal cancer may occur together and called colorectal cancer.

Colon cancer starts in the large intestine with polyps in the wall of the intestine. There may not be any symptoms in the early stage, but some gastrointestinal problems are common symptoms.

The common symptoms include diarrhea or constipation, change in stool consistency, loose and narrow stools, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, abdominal pain and cramps, bloating and  gas, pain during bowel movements, continual urges to defecate, weakness and fatigue, unexplained weight loss, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), iron deficiency anemia.

Colon cancer mostly occur in the persons over 50 years. Age is the important risk factor for colon cancer. Sedentary lifestyles, obesity and tobacco is the other cause of colon cancer.

The diet low fiber and high fat foods, high calories, red meat, alcohol, and processed meats are linked with the risk of colon cancer.

The other risk factors include diabetes, hormone disorder, acromegaly, radiation treatment for other cancers, inflammatory bowel disease like ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease.

The treatment for colon cancer include a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery, and possibly resulting in a colostomy.

The preventive measures include – a healthy weight, exercising regularly, consuming healthy fruits and vegetables, adding whole grains to your regular diet.
