Liver care tips

The liver is the largest single gland in the body. It is located on the right side of the abdomen under the lower ribs and just under the diaphragm which divides the chest from the abdomen. The liver is the body?s master, and most people consider that the liver is most important in the normal functioning of the body including the brain and heart. If there is any damage to the liver, then there can be serious complications, such as constipation, chronic gastritis, morning sickness, problems, etc. with the liver could be jaundice, hepatitis, cirrhosis and hepatomegaly i.e. enlarged liver, all which are potentially fatal diseases. Therefore it is very important to properly care for the liver.

  1. First step that should take in order to maintain the health of your liver is to avoid stimulants like coffee, tea and alcohol. The above mentioned beverages will cause heavy stress and strain. Therefore try to avoid such drinks to protect your liver. Certain beverages might also result in the formation of toxic substances.
  2. Papaya has been found beneficial in the treatment of cirrhosis of the liver, caused by alcoholism and malnutrition. Take a tablespoon of juice by grinding the seeds, mix with ten drops of fresh limejuice, and take it once or twice daily for about a month as a medicine for this disease. This is one of the important home remedies for liver care.
  3. Drink lemon water every morning as it is beneficial for liver. Lemon strengthens the functioning of liver and helps you digest your food by helping your liver produce more bile. Drink a combination of vegetable juice like spinach (palak) and carrot in the equal amount at least 3-4 days per week. This helps in detoxification of the liver.
  4. Do not forget to take good care of your stomach because you can stay healthy only when your stomach is healthy. You may not feel comfortable with your stomach when you have instant noodles, spicy food and avoid eating vegetables. You are suggested to take in food like pumpkin, hyacinth bean, spinach, carrots, broccoli, etc. These foods are good for your spleen. According to the traditional Chinese medicine, you should first nourish your spleen if you want to nourish your liver.
  5. Your liver could be badly affected by Hepatitis A. Although a patient recovers from this disease within 6 months but it symptoms can make you uncomfortable and disturb your daily activities for sometime. An average adult may not be able to work for at least 5 to 6 weeks due to Hepatitis A.
  6. Daily intake of a pinch of roasted alum with buttermilk two times or thrice daily is highly helpful in treating liver damage. Squeeze a lemon in 100 grams of water and add a pinch of salt, drink three times in a day for 21 days.
  7. Start changing your eating and drinking routine. Instead of drinking caffeinated drinks, consume lots of water, herbal teas, and fresh fruit juices. Cut off your consumption of processed foods, preservatives, artificial sugar, and alcoholic drinks. Smoking also contributes to the quantity of harmful toxins in our body so quit smoking to help the liver regenerate damaged liver cells.
